From TA to Teacher - BA (Hons) in Education: Secondary Maths and Special Needs
The University of Buckingham has designed a three-year BA (Hons) in Education: Secondary Maths and Special Needs course for those working as teaching assistants and staff in similar roles (e.g. cover supervisors, lab and IT technicians, sports coaches) without a degree currently working in secondary settings, who want to transition into maths teaching.
This degree is designed to enable you to work in a paid job while taking the course which is online, enabling you to do the work and complete tasks at times you can manage. You will have your own University of Buckingham tutor who will support you throughout the course.
This is a three-year BA degree course including a full year of content
and assignments addressing subject knowledge enhancement and pedagogic principles of mathematics teaching as well as additional course content considering the support of children with additional needs.
To become a teacher you will then need to complete a Qualified Teacher Status (ITT) course which may be paid, through your employer, by the apprenticeship levy. A typical teacher training course is only 10 months long, so adding a three-year degree to that will ensure you have a much higher level of knowledge.
