The STEM Hub
Inspiring the next generation in Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths
Canterbury Christ Church University operating as The STEM Hub holds the STEM Learning schools network contract for the South East of England and provides information and links to Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) Enhancement & Enrichment activities.
Based at Canterbury Christ Church University, the hub supports the agenda for ensuring a good supply of scientists, technologists, engineers and mathematicians in the UK.
The STEM Hub provide all schools and colleges in the South East region with free impartial advice and guidance on a wide range of STEM Enrichment and Engagement (E&E) activities, helping them to identify which opportunities can best inspire their young people in STEM.
These E&E activities produce successful STEM learners by offering engaging and achievable challenges, whilst building student confidence. They support students' development into responsible citizens through placing the STEM learning in relevant life contexts.
The Hub has a responsibility to:

enable young people to make informed decisions about future career paths in and from STEM.

provide teachers with impartial information and support to enable them to deliver STEM curriculum.

support industry in reducing the STEM skills gap.

raise the profile of science and engineering in the region.

PRIMARY ASSEMBLY TALK: FESTIVE MEASUREMENTS WITH NPL
In a 30-minute school primary assembly, Sharmila and Andrew Hanson, with help from NPL scientists, will unpack a miscellany of fun seasonal experiments to help you see how important measurement and science is.
Be prepared to participate and ask questions via a chat function.

Science Early Career Teacher Conference (Virtual)
A packed day of CPD designed to meet the needs of all. Select from a range of workshops throughout the day, ranging from subject specific sessions, working scientifically, maths in science, supporting disadvantaged students, literacy in science and the role of the wider STEM community. The keynote speaker, David Shakespeare, will explore ‘Motivating students in science lessons – is it what you do, or the way that you do it?’ in a hands-on start to the day.
Outcomes
You will be able to:
- Convey enthusiasm and develop self-awareness as a science teacher
- Use a range of strategies to encourage extended writing in science
- Develop subject knowledge and pedagogical approaches to teaching maths in science
- Identify the skills underpinning core practicals in the new GCSE, developing KS4 knowledge and teaching approaches
- Understand a range of strategies to stretch and challenge students to maximise progress
- Gain awareness of the STEM opportunities available locally through the STEM Ambassador hub
- Network and establish links with colleagues across the region

Location: Delivered remotely
Activity fee: Maintained £100.00 per delegate/Non-maintained £150 per delegate
This CPD is bursary funded, after the conference has been attended maintained schools will receive a bursary payment of £75 per delegate.
